AI Can Write the Test. Engineering Still Has to Prove It.

AI can produce an initial version of test software in hours.

That changes the beginning of the project. It does not eliminate the work required to prove that the system measures the right thing, responds safely, and produces decisions the organization can trust.

In physical test systems, the bottleneck increasingly comes after generation: integration, fault handling, instrument behavior, physical verification, traceability, and release.

That is the “last mile.”

This article examines how AI shifts the engineering bottleneck, why a passing run is not the same as a verified result, and why trusted infrastructure, reuse, standardization, and purpose-built development each still have a place when used deliberately.

The goal is not to slow AI-assisted development. It is to make sure faster development still leads to trustworthy engineering.
